Chapter 2 - Sorrow

" Faine!"

A woman blessed with grey hair and alluring blue eyes clad in a form-fitting grey gown runs towards the man holding the unconscious Faine, he gradually descends from the air and release the wind essence he summoned as he eases Faine unto the floor.

"How did this happen Rolan?! She should have been safe on this island!"

The woman- Faine's mother- Doliane, quickly calls forth water  from the air and cleans the severe burn marks on Faine's back, all Faine can release is a pained grunt as sweat starts to form on her forehead. Rolan looks at his daughter with a pained expression on his face as his fists clench, the gloves on his hands prevent his nails from digging into his skin from anger.

"They've found us... They know about Faine now" Was all Rolan could blurt out as he watched his daughter bite her lips from the pain as Doliane healed her while still unconscious.

Doliane's facial expression grew deeper and darker as she watched the gaping wound on Faine's back close up slowly, it was their fault as her parents for not properly training her to defend herself, instead they opted for keeping their only daughter alone to be raised by them on an island.

"Faine is not strong enough to protect herself, and she's not safe with us" Doliane grit her teeth as the wound then turned to a pink bruise which seemed to not heal no matter how much she forced pure essence into Faine to hasten her healing.

"Poison..." Doliane looked at a seeping black substance that passed though Faine's back, it pushed itself out through the pores and took the form of a small serpent and hovers above Faine. It made gurgling hissing sounds at Rolan and Doliane then quickly moved to attack Rolan.

Rolan quickly shot out wind blades at the liquid snake, it passed through the snake and scattered it but it regained it's form right after only to hiss again before shooting itself into the sky and splattering to form a black mist some meters into the sky which then scattered and went in several directions across the world to different destinations.

"Damn it!" Doliane stood up and watched as one of the black liquids shot off south-east. "It probably sent out messages on our whereabouts, we need to move within the next three days or else another chaser will come" She narrowed her eyes as she watched the black projectile disappear off in the distance.

"We need to start moving again dearest" Doliane looked lovingly at Rolan, but he diverted his eyes to Faine who was unaware of her situation.

"Faine hasn't learned of either of our families yet Doliane, she doesn't know what she's capable of, and we don't have time to teach her now. I should have taught her everything I know if I had known we would be discovered again" Rolan squatted on the floor by Faine's left and ruffled her hair.

"Rolan..." Doliane moved close to Rolan and leaned on him as they watched Faine sleep. "Don't worry my dearest, we can still impart our knowledge on her, though it will be rushed, but she will learn it in due time. She's our daughter after all."

Little did Faine know about the devilish training she would have to endure for the next two days and the end of it would forever  change her life.

The next day was hell. Faine woke up with a dull pain in her back and hardly had time to recover. Rolan kept her training on basic magic continuously until she collapsed on the floor completely drained of magic and vigour, but she was not allowed to rest because as soon as she collapsed, Doliane would bring revitalising pills and heal her wounds, then training would resume. It was this routine for the whole day.

Eat, train with magic, study the family history, train using only martial arts. Neither of her parents told her why they suddenly decided to teach her when they had been withholding so much to be imparted on her before. It made her suspicious but she chose to wait for them to tell her on their own.

The following day was worse, she was not allowed to rest, the only form of rest was to stay in a meditative state and call the elements around her to gather more essence, the elements around the island never came to Faine as naturally as they would for other people, she had to struggle to bring any element near her to use, the wind and water elements were the only ones that seemed willing to come to her summoning to be used for magic. The other elements were a hassle.

Then came the third morning after Faine had been attacked, the morning sun got into her eyes as she slept, causing her to turn over more and curse at the sun for disturbing her sleep.

  BANG!

The door slammed opened from being kicked which caused Faine to quickly get up and ready a wind-blade at her right hand as she lunged at the intruder, but her attack quickly clashed with a metal dagger imbued with spiritual essence.

She found herself on her butt the next second, she looked up to see her Father.

"You're getting good with your reflexes, too bad your training with me has been cut short" Rolan looks gloomily at the dagger in his hand and places it back in the sheath on his left thigh.

"Thank you Father, but what do you mean my training has been cut short? You and mother only started teaching me seriously about two days ago, is something going to happen?" Creases formed on Faine's forehead as she followed Rolan out her room to the front of their home.

Doliane could be seen holding a brown satchel, she fiddled with the hem on it as her eyes glaze over in deep thought and possibly regret.

However, when she looks up to see Rolan and Faine, her eyes clear up but there is still sadness visible in them.

"Faine... your father and I have something to tell you" Doliane averts her eyes as tears threaten to break free from the corners.

"We have to leave this island to somewhere else because of that incident that happened with the magician that attacked me" Faine interjected, she had thought about why her parents suddenly wanted her to learn everything they knew, it was because she was attacked and wasn't able to defend herself back then. The thought made her ashamed that she was so helpless.

"No, Faine... Your mother and I have something important to do, we cannot bring you with us" Rolan sternly said to Faine.

"W-what? No, Father... mother, you can't leave me by myself, you yourselves have already seen it, I'm still not strong enough to fight by myself" Faine's heart shook, she had lived her whole life on this island with only her parents as her companions, she had never come in contact with people with bad intentions before until the rogue magician attacked her, she wasn't ready.

"My dear daughter, the path we're going to embark on is dangerous, we're already getting old, if anything happens to us, we still have you, our dearest Faine, to live on for both of us" Doliane wiped a streak of tear from Faine's cheek.

The mother and daughter who both bore grey hair and blue eyes stared at each other as both of them were unwilling to part from the other.

"What are you and father going to do? Where are you going?" Faine was still unwilling to part, she wanted to prolong their stay together as much as she could.
please don't leave me, father... mother...

"You will know later, now is not the time, very soon more people will come, the same as the magician you encountered two days ago, they will come with only one goal in mind, to kill our family" Rolan released a bit of killer intent as he finished his sentence.

"-They're here!" Doliane quickly shoved the satchel into Faine's hands and cast an ice barrier over them, as soon as it formed, a hail of rocks rushed down and crashed into the barrier, shattering a layer off the ice dome.

"Listen to me Faine, it's too dangerous now that they know about you" Rolan gripped both of Faine's arms and tried to explain.

"Who are 'they'? Father, mother... Why are they after us?!" Faine gripped both her parents' arms, the sound of more rocks breaking down the layers of the ice barrier could be heard.

"Not Now Faine, I left you something in the satchel that can help you understand better, for now we need to fight off these rogues" Doliane released herself from Faine's grip and unsheathed her twin sabres, ice rapidly formed over them to add to their destructive force. She steadied herself and waited for the barrier to break down, after two more hits from the hail of rocks the barrier would break down.

"My dearest daughter, I only have this for you as a parting gift until we can meet again" Rolan placed his right index on Faine's forehead, a faint yellow light glowed from his fingertips to her head as her eyes closed, the light disappeared as soon as it came.

When she opened her eyes again, they seemed calmer and focused.

"I understand, father" She quickly hugged Roland and Doliane then whispered goodbye and wiped away her tears then set off behind them in the opposite direction as soon as the barrier broke.

The image of her parents fighting off the men dressed in black was the last thing she saw before she turned around and flew off to the shore of the island to get one of the boats.

Just as she was about to untie a boat, she sensed an attack coming from above and quickly moved to the side, a man dressed in black lands his attack on where she had stood on the boat, causing it to split in  two.

He hastily summons a small tornado and directs it towards her, she summons some earth essence and forms a crater on the floor and rushes forward and quickly summons water to encase the man.

"Argh! You bitch!" The man cries in anger and pain as the water constricts and crushes his rib cage bit by bit.

"You should have never targeted my family" Faine rushes forwards and summons all her strength into her right fist and delivers the finishing blow. The force from the enhanced punch shatters all the man's ribs and his spinal cord, he has no choice but to be a waste for his remaining life now.

Faine releases the water and the man falls limp on the floor with blood gushing out of his abdomen, he watches her untie another boat as life leaves his eyes.

As the boat sails away from the island, Faine looks up and sees smoke rising from the direction of her home. As though a tap has been opened, she breaks down in tears and screams at the heavens on why it has to be her and her family these people were after, after pounding the floor of the boat countless times with her teeth clenched does she finally fall asleep from the fatigue as night falls.
