Chapter 4 - A fallen tribe

Doliane spent the next few months after finding out who was responsible for the killing of her people and family, as she researched more, she found out from sources that the warhorens who had seemed passive towards her kingdom were behind it.

Though she had leads, they would keep slipping from her hands all the time, she had travelled to the Kingdom of Earth(Warhoren) after she left Xeraph, and was coming closer to unravelling the truth about the massacre.

After 6 years of travelling and investigations, her heart had hardened from the continuous expose to death since the day her family was slaughtered. Since she had left Xeraph she had to continuously fight her way for freedom from hired mercenaries and assassins.

Apparently a rumour was spread around in the land of Earth that a person matching the features of someone from Xeraph was around the area, that the missing princess had survived and was in Warhoren, a bounty was placed to catch her alive so she constantly had to fight and encountered surprise ambushes.

The people that tried to hunt her down left her no choice but to silence them by death.

Along the way she had befriended a male on the way to Dezaren, a small country located south of Khalinia, the Kingdom Faine and her family currently resided in.

Doriane had almost fallen for the man, he was not insanely handsome as most men in that time period  but he had a devilish charm about him, his copper hair which was kept short to his shoulders always found a way to cover a bit of his face. The man had a finely chiseled jaw and his Adams apple could be seen moving ever so slightly with every word spoken from him.

He wore normal clothes and appeared to be a traveler, staying with the man as her travel companion for a month and fighting through the ambushes with the man made Doliane develop a sense of dependency on the man, which was her mistake.

She was still naive to think there was such a man who would help a wanted person without some ulterior motive.

On one of their nights spent in the forest in hiding, the man offered to cook the meal for once, little did Doliane know that it would be poisoned!

After eating the food, she discovered that it was mixed with poison to suppress magic and strength, she laid there limply after and watched mercenaries appear from a bush in the corner and paid the man who was supposedly her trusted travel companion a few silver coins.

She laughed bitterly in her heart upon seeing the amount she was deemed to be worth to be ratted out on by someone she thought she could trust.

No strength could be summoned by her when she was tied up by the man, he carried her to the men and was roughly thrown into a steel cage with magic and strength suppressants engraved all over the cage. These men were well prepared to not take any chances although she was already poisoned.

That was the last time she saw her former travel companion, this would be a grudge she would not let go of in this lifetime.

Along the way to where ever they planned to take her to, she listen to the men gloat about the reward they would get for bringing back the princess of a fallen nation to their contractor. The more she listened, the more her heart seethed with anger, the one who had hired these people was somebody who was in the inner faction on the Warhoren Kingdom, her suspicions all these years were confirmed.

Someone who had great power had ordered the extermination of her people, was it that they feared they would be upturned one day by the people of Xeraph?

Doliane scuffed at the idea, her father had no thoughts on war, he was a peaceful and caring man. But what made the person from Warhoren target them? there was no grudge in their relationship apart from the unusual amount of talents in her kingdom.

She tried to resist and opted for attacking one of the men standing a little close to the cage, her face barely passes through the bars but she get her target.

Her teeth bite into the flesh of the man and rips off a chunk from the man's neck, blood from his arteries gush out as he releases blood curdling screams from pain and attracts the attention of the four other burly men. The other mercenary behind the attacked man quickly recovers from his shock and lands a swift hand chop at the back of Doliane's neck, she spits out the piece of flesh and feels darkness creeping in along with a ringing pain.

Before she blacks out, she hears thrashing around in the background accompanied with the sound of pained grunts, she passes out before she can see her saviour.

Waking up with a dull pain at the back of her head was what greeted Doliane as she groggily sat up and found that her restrains were gone along with the steel cage.

A man could be seen sitting across her roasting fish over a fire between them, he noticed she was awake and approached her with some fish he had roasted previously and had kept on the side.

But Doliane was weary of friendly men at that moment, she shuffled back only to bump her head into the trunk of a tree.

The man found it hilarious and introduced himself after having a laughing fit at her clumsiness, it was there that Doliane met Rolan.

She did not want to owe the man for him saving her life so she relentlessly followed him after despite his refusal, at times he would try to leave when he thought she was sleeping but would find her in front of his path after walking for an hour or so away from where he sneaked away from her sleeping figure.

Rolan finally gave in and allowed her to follow him until she saw a chance to save his life to repay her debt, it was strenuous and annoying to drag around dead weight.

[Faine nearly laughed from this part of her father's memory, he was quite sharp-mouthed when he was a youth.]

After a few Months of Doliane following Rolan around and not finding the opportunity to save his life, they finally began to warm up around the other, but Doliane was still weary of Rolan at the time because she had just been tricked and taken advantage of a while ago, which she would not let to live down in this life.

Rolan and Doliane became close as the months went by and he finally warmed up enough to Doliane to tell her about the Arte Clan which he was from.

The Arte Clan was a dying clan which had dwindled in numbers over the years and were sought after for their ability to summon spirits.

The reason their ability to summon spirits was wanted was because in this world, practitioners of whichever element had to ask the spirits of those elements to lend them a bit of their power before they could cast spells like wind blades or cast attacks spell, to even enhance strength was with the help of an elemental spirit.

Arte Clan members were able to summon the spirits themselves and communicate with them, the people from other continents were fascinated by this mysterious and enchanting power of the Arte Clan, but with great power comes great trouble.

The Arte Clan members were tracked down and used to the bone to serve those in higher powers, they would summon the earth spirit and cause landslides during wars.

Enemy nations would kidnap Arte Clan members and force them to cause drought in their enemy's city, it was a horrible thing to live through, they were treated as slaves, driving some to commit suicide.

Gradually, the members who feared their offspring would be treated in the same way, refused to have children, for fear that their family would continue in slavery and servitude.

Then about forty years ago the Arte Clan was never heard of again, they were weak and had been used for others purposes.

Rolan was from a family that had ran and hidden from the eyes of others during such times of war, where the people from their clan were in demand.

He revealed his lineage to Doliane knowing full well that it would put him at risk, but that caused Doliane to begin to trust him.

Over time she told him about her own tragedy and the two's relationship improved over time.

After 4 years together, they decided to settle down on a Island which was secluded from the rest of the world and would be considered safe.

A year later they found out Doliane was carrying Faine in her womb, which lead to how things were until recently.

Her mother had momentarily given up on her investigations and searching, to have a family.

After going through her parents memories in her head one more time, she decided to let that digest as she opened the satchel to look through it.

What she saw inside surprised her, because she thought she had already gotten most of the information she needed, a note from her mother was found inside.
